Additive manufacturing (AM) is one of the crucial tools of the new paradigm of Industry 4.0. AM implies a revolutionary change in the production industry, and a deep knowledge about the achievable product precision is needed. This chapter is focused on a review of the most relevant factors related to the dimensional accuracy and surface roughness in these free-form manufacturing technologies, and the mathematical models that can help to guarantee adequate AM process performance. The algorithms that describe the effect of layer thickness, surface orientation angle, surface profile angle, z-error, xy-error, beam offset, lamination borders, penetration depth, extruder errors, fused deposition borders, layer composition, particle adhesion, and other related factors will be shown. This technical information will provide the basis for a detailed understanding of the performance of AM technologies, and the selection of the recommended configuration and parameters that make the process optimization possible. |
