Optical Rotation Assay for Determination of Sorbitol in the Presence of Mannitol and Sugars

Popis: The optical rotation of molybdate complexes of mannitol and sorbitol are measured in low acidity medium and thus only the mannitol content is determined. In high acidity medium both hexitols exhibit concentration-dependent optical rotation. Mannitol content is corrected for and the concentration of sorbitol is calculated. The effect of sugars can be corrected for by measuring optical rotation in the absence of molybdate. Reproducibility of the sorbitol determination is characterized by a standard deviation of 0.328%.
