Popis: | Thyroid disease remains a common disorder worldwide. In the UK thyrotoxicosis has a prevalence of 2% in women and 0.2% in men. Thyroid diseases affect the function of the thyroid gland. It is associated with thyroid hormone dysfunction and/or thyroid gland enlargement, which may be either benign (nodules or a goitre) or malignant. Thyroid function is divided into normal thyroid hormone activity (euthyroid), reduced thyroid activity (hypothyroidism), and increased thyroid activity, over activity (hyperthyroidism, which if uncontrolled can lead to thyrotoxicosis). These patients are frequently encountered in anaesthesia and an understanding of the pathophysiology of thyroid disease and its associated signs, symptoms and associated complications is essential. In the article we will consider thyroid anatomy, pathophysiology and anaesthetic management. |
