OFFICIAL egg laying tests have been conducted in the United States since 1911; a brief history of their initial development appeared in a report of the New Jersey Egg Laying Tests by Lewis, Hannas and Wene (1919). Since their beginning, laying tests have been developed in various states, most of them operated more or less in accordance with the general plan of the first test but varying in certain details to meet local conditions. The number of birds entered was not always uniform; nor were the practices associated with replacement birds and egg counting, some tests using only eggs laid in the nests and others including eggs gathered from the floor. In some tests, only the records of selected birds were used for the official score, such as the 10 highest out of 13 entered.
