Popis: It is argued that the notion topic is unnecessary for an account of some interesting features of the Philippine language Tagalog (facts from Schachter (1976)). An analysis is proposed in which the topic is analyzed as the structural subject, supporting Chomsky's (1981) claim that NP-VP partitioning is universal. Crucial to our analysis is the adoption of a model of grammar consisting of two parallel representations, one of which is order-free. This model derives from Chomsky (1981 : 127–135), Zubizarreta and Vergnaud (1982), Hale (1983) and Mohanan (1984), among others. Within this model some Tagalog facts concerning free word order, reflexivization, case-marking, relativization and control receive a natural explanation.
