Since first writing about the explanation of behavior I have come to see a number of additional problems that the topic raises. Intentions cause behavior, but psychology is not a natural science, for psychological explanations presuppose a measure of rationality. But people do sometimes act irrationally, as for example when the agent lacks moral imagination in Werhane’s sense or perception in Aristotle’s and frames an action wrongly. We may act from social pressure but then rationalize. Our emotions may mislead us, though in some cases they may guide us better than does our attempted rationality. Aristotle offers a well-known account of how all this happens. |
