Some English allomorphy is quite regular. This chapter describes a representative set of predictable allomorphs as the output of phonological rules applying to the original, classical pronunciations. The fifteen rules in this chapter involve assimilation, deletion, insertion, rhotacism, weakening, vowel coloring, and coalescence of consonants. The chapter ends with a section on morphemes for numbers. Included are very small and very large ones, most of them based on classical Latin or Greek. |
