Existing literature comprises a rich but disconnected set of case studies of approaches to involving local residents in protected area (PA) enforcement efforts. Collating and analysing such approaches systematically would help build a clearer understanding of the characteristics of different types of approaches, the types of approaches that are most common, and the reported effectiveness of community involvement. A better understanding of which approaches work best under different circumstances would support evidence-based decision-making and may help to inform PA law enforcement strategies. We aim to facilitate this by providing a descriptive overview of how local residents contribute to marine and terrestrial PA law enforcement. |
