A histochemical study of the glycoprotein and proteoglycan components of the matrix of mouse embryo long bones grown in vivo and in vitro has been performed. The comparison between the pattern of ossification in vivo and in vitro indicates that in vitro the synthetic and maturative functions of specific carbohydrate containing substances (CCS) is severely altered. A continuously acting differentiative mechanism is postulated for the in vivo situation. Under in vitro conditions calcification does not occur. This observation, taken together with the presence of altered CCS, indicates that CCS might be involved in the normal calcification mechanism. |
