Popis:	Better techniques are needed to distinguish and interpret observations made during surveys of photograph collections. A method is being developed to identify breakdown due to unstable materials or processing, and the process is described. The climatic dilemma for storing mixed collections is demonstrated. The possibility of developing a sustainable strategy for preserving archival material is discussed; combining advantages of the local environment and the specific condition of a collection can lead to efficient preservation of records at low cost.
