The study sought to determine the effect of generation capacity expansion on the LOLE as the load grows with time. The Recursive Technique was used to construct the capacity outage probability table to represent the generation model. Python-based Generation System Adequacy Program (GSAP) Software was developed to assess the generation system expansion planning of the Ghana Power System. A total combined generation capacity of 660 MW was added to the system anytime the LOLE exceeded the industry standard value of 0.1 days/year. For the period 2019 to 2020, the LOLE is below the industry standard. But in the year 2021, the LOLE worsens and doubles to a value of 0.2001 days/year. The addition of a generation capacity of 660 MW reduces the LOLE value to 0.0104 days/year. It is better to integrate small-capacity and medium-capacity generating units for small systems with positive reserve margin and zero reserve margin, respectively. |
