EnglishSicca syndrome is defined as the presence of objective symptoms of dryness at different levels, most commonly in the ocular region and oral cavity. Xerophthalmia and xerostomia are defined as the subjective sensation of oral or ocular dryness, respectively. Dryness can be idiopathic, have a pharmacological origin or be secondary to an autoimmune disease such as Sjogren's Syndrome. Sjogren's syndrome (SS) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by lymphocytic infiltration and progressive destruction of the salivary and lacrimal glands. Sicca syndrome requires a multidisciplinary cross-sectional approach since the treatment is symptomatic and depending on the involvement that the patient presents, it can be managed by different specialists. |
