Popis: The European Union (EU) faces the challenge of gradually decarbonizing its power sector and economy while in parallel securing its energy supply. In this article, the EU policy objectives as well as the main policy instruments are presented and discussed, for example, the EU Emission Trading Scheme, the Third Energy Package, and the Renewable Energy Directive. Although designed to tackle specific issues, these instruments also had undesired side-effects, especially on the completion of the internal energy market. Special attention is given to the impending fragmentation of the internal electricity market that is ultimately caused by differences in national policies. On the gas side, the issue of import dependency is discussed in detail. Keywords: climate change; energy policy; European Union; renewable energy; gas; electricity
