Popis: Carleton E. Watkins (1829–1916) stands as one of the world's foremost 19th-century landscape photographers. In the course of a career which spanned 50 years, Watkins photographed not only Yosemite but a vast region of the American West, from Mexico to British Columbia, from the Farralon Islands, in the Pacific Ocean, to Yellowstone in Wyoming. As a point of comparison, California alone has a total land surface of 158 693 square miles, or 99898880 acres. Within this vast region, the profusion of varying landscapes offers some of the world's most inspiring scenery. Altitudes vary from 14495 ft at the top of Mt. Whitney, the highest point in the United States outside Alaska, to a minus 282 ft at Bad water in Death Valley, though these two points are only 60 miles apart!
