Objective: A case of severe acquired methaemoglobinaemia is reported. The condition is uncommon and the severity of this case is notable. The nature of the condition, its diagnosis and management are reviewed. Clinical features: A 35 year old woman was brought to the Emergency Department by ambulance in a moribund state with an indication that she may have ingested amyl nitrite. Interventions and outcome: The patient was treated with methylene blue, responded promptly, was admitted to the intensive care unit and subsequently discharged from hospital well. Conclusion: Although uncommon, some poisonings are rapidly fatal. It is vital that doctors practising emergency medicine are well acquainted with such poisonings so that patients may be treated in an appropriate and timely fashion. |
