Objectives: The main objective of this research is to know the state of the art from the existing scientific literature about studies involving body image and health-related quality of life in adult women who underwent surgical treatment for breast cancer. Introduction: Breast cancer is a disease caused by the disorderly multiplication of abnormal breast cells, which forms a tumor with the potential to invade other organs. The treatment for this disease (surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and systemic treatment) can lead to physical symptoms such as body aches, loss of vaginal lubrication, fatigue, and sleep disturbances. In addition, psychological symptoms are also involved in this process, such as anxiety, depression, isolation, low self-esteem and fear of death. Thus, it is noteworthy that even though it is no longer considered a fatal diagnosis due to new treatment technologies, in most cases, there is still the impact of the clinical picture and the side effects of therapies on the mental and physical health of women, according to the procedures involved in their healing. Therefore, surgical treatments can cause a feeling of loss of previously known identity, based on the modification of the perceived body image and the negative repercussions on the quality of life of these women. Inclusion criteria: Only texts of academic authors that mention empirical studies that include results that relate body image, quality of life and breast cancer in women who underwent surgical treatment are included. Only manuscripts written in English, Spanish and Portuguese will be considered. Methods: A scoping review will be conducted following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. PubMed, PsycINFO and Scopus databases will be searched, and articles published until August 2022 will be included. Search terms will be in English. Via the software Zotero, each researcher will independently upload all references and include or exclude them to the review and label them. |
