American history and American identity are defined in these programs in terms of absence and exclusion. Native Americans and African-Americans are included only as signifiers of a distant past. Present as an idea but absent as individuals, both groups haunt white popular culture while being denied the chance to speak for themselves. Episodes illustrate the sensational exploitation of historical material (slavery, lynching, genocide), the difference made by interventions from present-day Native American and African-American scholars, and recent attempts to construct programs around African-American cast members. |
