The aim of this research is to present the results of a geo-environmental site investigation study accomplished on an old industrial landfill, through the combined use of direct (geological/geotechnical soundings and monitoring wells) and indirect methods (surface geophysics and resis- tivity cone penetration test - RCPT) of subsurface investiga- tion. With the results of a surface geophysics survey (resis- tivity method) the contaminated subsoil zones have been identified and the groundwater monitoring network has been designed. A series of vertic al resistivity cone tests have been carried out to evaluate the contamination depth in the perimeter of the landfill and the electric characteristic of the waste (acid oily sludge). It was found that the contaminant plume, formed from the deposi t, reduces electrical resistivity properties of the subsoil layers. Resistivity profiles allowed identifying a highly contaminated region at depths up to 5 m which has been characterized by very low resistivity val- ues. The results of RCPT tests have been compared with the geophysics surveys. Compatibility between the results was observed beginning at a depth of 5 m. The contamination levels of the groundwater, in ferred from the RCPT results, were comparable with the chemical analysis data of the monitoring wells |
