The electrochemical behaviour of sodium chloride and sodium iodide dissolved in dimethylsulphoxide on platinum electrodes has been examined. The cathodic reaction involves the initial discharge of sodium ion and subsequent chemical reactions between metallic sodium and the solvent. The anodic reaction occurring in the electrolysis of sodium iodide involves reactions of the iodide and tri-iodide ions. Solutions of sodium iodide with added iodine were also electrolysed. The results indicate the existence of the equilibrium I − + I 2 ⇄I 3 − , and are explained on the basis of an equilibrium constant for tri-iodide formation that is larger than that in aqueous solutions. |
