Preeclampsia and preeclampsia superimposed on chronic hypertension in Buenos Aires

Its incidence varies among different populations and hospitals, but it has been estimated that up to 5% of pregnancies are affected. Objective: To study the prevalence and pregnancy records in women who developed Preeclampsia and superimposed Preeclampsia and to analyze the complications associated with both pathological conditions. Methods: A descriptive, quantitative and retrospective chart review was conducted on all the pregnancies with Preeclampsia and superimposed Preeclampsia attended at the Hospital Posadas, (Buenos Aires, Argentina) during 2010. Results: A total of 4845 births were attended at the Hospital Posadas during 2010. The occurrence of self-reported chronic hypertension in the anamnesis was 5.31%. Among the 4587 normotensive women, 83 developed preeclampsia (1.81%), while 28 (10.85%) of 258 hypertensive gestants had superimposed preeclampsia (incidence1⁄40.58%).
