Vitelline platelets of the female K. isopodicola are sometimes cloven in half through both the dense core and the granular outer zone. Multiple membranes are associated with the central fissure. The epithelium of the paired ovo-vitelline ducts is composed of complexly interdigitating processes. Spermatozoa are found inserted between the interdigitating processes. The central common ovo-vitelline duct is provided with long cilia of the ‘9 + 2’ type, and microvilli fringe the lining epithelium. Ducts of the accessory reproductive gland, which discharge into the common ovo-vitelline duct cavity, are supported by peripheral microtubules and are embedded in dense, fibrillar material. Presumably the direction of travel of spermatozoa in the epithelia of the ovo-vitelline ducts is towards the lumen, and insemination is accomplished by the primitive method, through the epidermis, despite the presence of a gonopore. |
