Summary Callus tissues of 2 barley varieties grown as long-term cultures under identical conditions on identical media showed substantial differences with respect to their physiological and cytological features. The callus cultures examined by means of light-microscopy are characterized by mitotic index curves with 1 peak 2–5 days after transfer of the cells into a fresh nutrient medium. About 12 days later ageing processes begin to appear. The intense growth of callus cultures of the special strain of variety ‘Elgina’ has been found to be connected with a higher mitotic index and more pronounced proliferation of the cells than of calli from the variety ‘Bulgarische Nackte’; cytodifferentiation, however, is more pronounced in the latter than in the former. |
