Popis: This paper presents a recent study performed by Airbus and ONERA with the objective to quantify the impact of counter-rotating open rotors (CROR) on the aerodynamic characteristics of aircraft at high speed. In a short introduction, the industrial context and the state of the art of research in the field of CROR aerodynamics are reviewed. The criteria of stability are succinctly recalled, as well as the dierent eects of a CROR engine on the handling qualities and performances of the aircraft. As test case, a concept aircraft equipped with CROR engines in a pusher configuration is considered. The methods used for the numerical simulation are briefly described. The obtained numerical results are then presented in terms of the impact of CROR aerodynamics on the global aerodynamic coefficients of the aircraft and on the local flow physics, focusing on the key results. Finally, the paper closes with a conclusion summarizing the impact of a CROR engine on the handling qualities and performances of the aircraft and giving a description of the work to be performed in the near future.
