Spectrophotometric investigation of the magnetic variable star 21 Per. I

Popis: The changes in the radial velocities and intensities of the spectral lines at different phases of the period were investigated for the magnetic variable 21 Per. Chemical elements are found to be situated in two opposite spots on the surface. Lines of the heavy elements Hg I, W I, Os I, Ag I, and Am I are suspected. Curves of the varying intensity of these lines were obtained. The spectral features of 21 Per present difficulties for the interpretation of the chemical anomalies in individual sections of the surface of Ap stars and the possible presence of heavy elements forces one to take nuclear reactions seriously as the origin of the anomalies in the chemical composition. The fact that the V light curve and the curve of the intensity variation for the europium and gadolinium lines have the same profile does not contradict the conjecture that additional absorption by rare earth elements in the ultraviolet part of the spectrum is one of the factors responsible for the photometric variability in V.
