Popis:	A defined medium for growing cells ofCytophaga johnsonae was developed for use in studies of the genetics of gliding motility of this organism. The defined medium, containing only mineral salts and any of six sugars, supports good growth of actively motile cells of several strains ofC. johnsonae. Characteristics of growth in the defined medium and ability of cells to use alternative sources of carbon and nitrogen are reported. Certain compounds, when added to solid media, inhibit colony spread ofC. johnsonae without affecting motility of individual cells. Amino acid requirements were determined for 41 of 43 auxotrophic mutants isolated following penicillin selection of unmutagenized cells growing in the minimal medium.
