Over the past decade, investigations into industrial hydrocarbon applications have produced advancements in methane storage for alternative energy, energy-intensive olefin/paraffin separation, sequestration of heavy hydrocarbons, and removal of toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Nevertheless, separation and storage of hydrocarbons by traditional techniques, such as cryogenics, induce high operating costs which must be reduced. Efforts to address this problem have led to the investigation of more efficient and cost-effective technologies such as membrane and adsorption. In this chapter, we provide a detailed description of solid adsorbents and membrane materials and summarize their potential in hydrocarbon molecules separation applications. |
