Popis: The name Jorge Luis Borges rarely comes to mind in a survey of Hispanic love poets. The omission may be attributed to a general lack of familiarity with Borges' poetry, in particular his early work written as a young man during the late 1910s and 1920s.1 In any case, the myth of Borges as a cold, cerebral author untouched by human concerns persists even among those personally acquainted with him. For example, the Argentine writer Estela Canto, with whom Borges was romantically involved for years between 1944 and the early 1950s, has portrayed him as "un escritor que nunca escribe sobre mujeres, como no sea como complemento o pretexto para una situaci?n dram?tica que prescinde de ellas" (69).
