In 2004 BYU researchers reported on a General Motors EV1 vehicle that they received from G.M. and modified to run on ultracapacitors. The EV1 set a world's record as the fastest modified-production electric vehicle in national competition, as well as the world's only reported capacitor-powered race car. During the past year planned modifications have been implemented and the car has broken its previous record by 1.8 seconds.
