The Recognition and Application of Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment from Chinese Geriatricians

Popis: Introduction/Objective: The purpose of this study was to unveil the current status of Chinese geriatricians and appeal to an imperative reform in geriatric clinical practice Design/Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted in three biggest general hospitals in Chengdu, China in 2012. A total of 100 geriatricians were selected. The survey was conducted by an anonymous questionnaire including 12 questions. Microsoft tool Excel 2010 software was applied to analyze the data. Results: It was revealed in our research that geriatricians were well educated basically; none of them received specialty training in geriatrics. Of the 98 geriatricians available, 45.9% of which consult other department one or two times a week and sub-divisions of internal medicine made up about 60.0% of all the departments of consultation. 74.5% of geriatricians had known a little about the geriatric syndrome. 14.3% of them had never heard about geriatric syndrome. About 20% were not aware of the CGA (Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment). Geriatricians who are satisfied with their job only made up 27.6%. Conclusion/Discussion: Facing the increasing number of elder people and various diseases and co-morbidities followed in our society, there is a call for new working mode for Chinese geriatricians. And it is significant for geriatricians to attend geriatric specialty training and update their knowledge constantly.
