This paper describes some vocalization adaptations. Horses in open pasture usually communicate visually but when placed in separate barn stalls, with restricted visibility and mobility, must rely more on their vocalizations, referred to as barntalk. In addition they rapidly learn to recognize sounds from unseen objects of interest such as a feed cart or their owner.
