Popis: An overview is given of the residual stresses produced by the quenching of martensitic steel based on the literature from about 1970 to 2010. The text first gives a definition of residual stresses, their origins, and methods to measure them and then presents a qualitative description of residual stress creation. A more detailed description of how various types of martensite hardening give rise to residual macro and pseudomacro stresses is given with both experimental data and computer modeling. The effect of tempering and fatigue loading on residual hardening stresses is discussed based on experimental data. Finally, a short mention is made of commercial codes that allow calculation of martensite hardening stresses.
