While clinical studies tend to define “family and physical health” in terms of disease patterns among individuals sharing close biological or hereditary ties, the social sciences conceptualize this phenomenon in the broader context of culture, history, and macrolevel socioeconomic and political structures. Thus, in medical anthropology, “family and physical health” denotes all beliefs, behaviors, values, and roles which promote, sustain, or restore well-being among a broad kin group that is linked by blood, marriage, contractual obligations, or mutual agreement. Thus, there exists significant variance between biomedical and cross-cultural understandings of both physical health and family.
