We will explore predictors of participation in the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Birth Cohort Study (MoBa) and the potential impact of bias due to selective initial participation and subsequent attrition on estimated associations between socioeconomic and mental health outcomes. Individual-level register data will be linked to participants and nonparticipants who were eligible to take part in MoBa. We will identify differentially related relatives within the target population and use this information to estimate the heritability of participation phenotypes (i.e. initial participation and attrition) and explore to what extent the aetiological influences on initial participation and attrition overlap. We will extend previous work by examining the genetic and environmental overlap between participation phenotypes and socioeconomic and psychiatric traits using biometric modelling and polygenic scoring, and investigate whether selection effects contribute to biases in phenotypic and genetic analyses. |
