Assisted reproductive technology (ART) in Thailand has increased in reputation through commercial oocyte donors and commercial surrogacy, combined with affordability and a loose regulatory framework. However, a series of scandals emerged in 2011–14 that provoked the release of the Protection for Children Born From Assisted Reproductive Technologies Act B.E.2557 in 2015. The Act completely prohibited and criminalized commercial surrogacy and banned foreign couples and same-sex couples from access to ART in Thailand. This chapter provides a background to Thai culture and introduces its economics, politics, and health care system from the beginning of ART to the consequences of the Act. Points of improvement are demonstrated from a local practitioner’s prospective. |
