Popis: | We have retrospcecively evaluated 46 cases of viper bite we experienced over the past 5 years (1992-1996). The mean number of patients per year was 9.2. All bites occurred from April to November, with most cases occurring in July and August. The age of the patients ranged from 4 to 86 years (mean age: 60 years) and patients over 51 years of age accounted for 83% of all patients. The most frequently bitten region was fingers, followed by dorsum pedis, and toes. Most patients experienced local swelling. Other symptoms included subcutaneous and internal bleeding and eye symptoms. Swelling was most marked on the first day in case of patients with mild swelling, and on the second and third days in case of severe swelling. Patients with severe swelling also presented systemic symptoms. Hospitalization period was longer for patients with severe swelling and systemic symptoms. All the patients recovered after the therapy involving local incision, irrigation, and administration of cepharanthin and antivenin. Antivenin was used in 80% of the cases and it seemed to be useful. Forty-one percent of the patients revealed a positive reaction to the intracutaneous injection of antivenin, but only 8% of them were developed serum disease. |
