Popis: The estrous-cycle irregularities induced in female mice by unisexual grouping were not abolished by ablation of the vomeronasal organ (VNO). The cycle irregularities in VNO-ablated females housed in unisexual groups were similar to those in sham-operated and intact females housed in unisexual groups. Exposure of unisexually grouped VNO-ablated females to conspecific males induced estrus in the majority of females within 7 days with the characteristic peak on day 3 (the Whitten effect). Sham-operated, as well as intact females also showed the Whitten effect following male exposure. The results suggest that the VNO is not involved in the perception of the female-originating pheromone inducing estrous-cycle irregularities, and the male-originating pheromone causing induction of estrus.
