Popis: The mortality in patients with diffuse and faecal peritonitis is reported to be between 15% and 40% [9, 10]. Because the number of such cases observed in a single institution is small, reports are usually carried out retrospectively over periods of up to 10 years [5]. It is therefore difficult to assess the progress made with recent improvements in antibiotic and intensive care treatment. Owing to the significant number of cases in our department we retrospectively reviewed the clinical records of patients who had presented with diffuse purulent or faecal peritonitis over the preceding 3 years.
