Popis: | A front engine support ductile iron casting has been used to conduct a defect analysis. For the same heat, some castings were obtained free of shrinkage defects, whereas others had shrinkage defects. Design and casting simulations were performed before pouring, and the simulation results indicated shrinkage free casting. To understand the reason for shrinkage in casting, thermal analysis was carried out for 32 heats. Thermal analysis showed that the recalescence has a major impact on the shrinkage. Statistical tools were used to find a correlation between the numbers of castings with shrinkage and recalescence. It was observed that the shrinkage is linearly dependent on recalescence. The statistical ability to predict the shrinkage from the recalescence was ∼63%, assuming a normal distribution. |
