Popis: According to the unification scheme of FRII radio galaxies and radio loud quasars Cygnus A should harbour a hidden quasar in its nucleus. Cygnus A presents observational features, such as a bright Extended Narrow Line Region (ENLR), which can be explained by the interaction of the radio jets with the ISM of the host galaxy and/or by photoionization by the hidden active nucleus Similar processes are most probably present in higher-redshift radio galaxies and radio quasars. However, due to its proximity and to the fact that the active nucleus is hidden from our line of sight, we can study these processes in much more detail in Cygnus A. We review the observational evidence for a hidden quasar-like nucleus and present new estimates of the intrinsic luminosity of the nucleus from a study of the extended gas.
