Popis: As the number of newly identified cases of tuberculosis in the United States decreases, the relative importance of mycobacterial species other than M. tuberculosis increases. The incidence of such species and recent developments in increasing the sensitivity of the smear for acid-fast bacilli are detailed. Programs for monitoring primary drug resistance to M. tuberculosis and changes in the therapy for tuberculosis are also discussed.
