For the commercial fabrication of a-Si/μc-Si tandem modules, thin absorber layers are highly desirable since production cost decreases with layer thickness. Improving the light-management in our modules, in particular by an improved back-reflector, allowed for a reduction in thickness of top- and bottom-cell. Further, investigating lightdegradation behavior of different top- and bottom-cell thickness combinations, we find only minor differences in stabilized power. Realizing that layer thickness can be reduced without significant power loss, the original process was optimized for thinner absorber layers. After optimizing the production process a large module (A = 1.4 m2) with thin bottom-cell absorber layer of 1200 nm and a stabilized efficiency of 10% was realized. Modules produced with industrial scale tools indicate that for commercial application even thinner cell combinations will be favorable.
