Although there are many imaging techniques available for evaluation of wrist and hand disorders, such as ultrasound, tomography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, the initial examination technique is and remains plain routine radiography. Routine radiographs should be performed carefully in a standardized way to avoid misdiagnosis and should be analyzed systematically. The number of radiographic positions depends on the clinical information and clinical questions. In cases of trauma, normally ipsilateral views of the injured wrist or hand are adequate. For inflammatory or systemic disorders, bilateral wrist and/or hand views have to be obtained. In this chapter the most important positions for routine radiography of the wrist and hand, criteria for an adequate examination, and a systematic approach for analysis are described. |
