Pain and injury related to the spine are common complaints in the dancer. Certain demands of the discipline increase the risk of back injury, while poor technique, overuse, and muscle imbalance can exacerbate this risk. This chapter will discuss the important postural and alignment issues in the dancer related to the spine, as well as the common conditions that may affect the young dancer with back pain. A review of the risk factors, examination findings, treatment modalities, and indications for more urgent assessment will be presented. Special attention is given to scoliosis in the young dancer. Identification of this condition is particularly important given its greater prevalence in young dancers than in the general population. |
