CYGNUS-PCM ECLSS characterization/validation testing and design evolution

Popis: Thales Alenia Space-Italia has developed the environmental system of the Cygnus Pressurized Cargo Module (PCM), part of the Cargo Resupply System (CRS) developed by Orbital Sciences Corporation in the frame of the Commercial Orbital Transportation Systems (COTS) initiative. The Environmental Control & Life Support System (ECLSS), described in a dedicated paper presented at ICES in 2010, has been manufactured and integrated on the first PCM units (PCM demo, PCM#1 and PCM#2) since the second half of the year 2010 and first half of year 2012. The ECLSS has been subjected to several tests aimed to confirm its performances: • THC Flow Rate test, • Cabin Ventilation test, • Overall module leak tests (“ELT - Element Leak Test”). In the meantime the design has been adjusted to implement the test outcomes. This paper describes the ECLSS characterization and modeling validation tests set-up and results (with particular attention to th e Cabin Ventilation test) and the design improvements following the tests.
