Business models and Business Model Innovation (BMI) is an emerging topic in literature that this is still relatively new. An agreement about the definition of business model is yet to be reached among scholars and practitioners alike. The lack of clear definitions about this concept has led to a lack of cumulative and converging research in this field. Notwithstanding, research on business models and business model innovation has seen a consistent upward trend. Methodology: Given that this work investigates how business model innovation frameworks are used in startups, an exploratory research was deemed adequate to fulfill this objective. To gather the primary data to answer the research question(s) of this study, semi-structured interviews were conducted from multiple cases using a multiple case study design methodology. The collected data was then analyzed using a qualitative data analysis tool known as Atlas.ti. A mixture of deductive and inductive approach was deployed during the analysis of the data collected. Cases were selected using a Snowball sampling methodology. Implications: This research contributes the academic discussion about the applicability of business model innovation tools in various contexts and with a specific focus to the context of startups. Not a lot of studies have been done in the past that contextualizes business model innovation frameworks to startups. This work attempts to fill that gap. Moreover, this work also attempts add value in the discussion about the ideal business model framework and whether BMI frameworks should be modified for different contexts or whether a âone size fits allâ approach should be followed. Lastly, this work gives recommendations about how the business model frameworks should be used in startups thereby helping startups managers to get more value out these tools to boosts their chances of success in their ventures. Future research: In order to improve the reliability of the results, a larger sample size should be selected in future work. To improve the validity of the study, future work should attempt to go deeper on each case to unearth more detailed and richer data. |
