To address the dearth of flying qualities criteria for very large transport ahcraft a piloted, in-flight simulation experiment using the USAF Total In-Flight Simulator (TIFS) was undertaken. Configurations with various levels of short period frequency, acceleration sensitivity and equivalent time delay were flown and evahrated by a number of pilots. The pilot ratings were used to appraise the performance of the Control Anticipation Parameter (CAP) criterion using the equivalent system methodology. The results indicated that for large transports the Category C Level 1 CAP lower boundary could be raised slightly. The results also identified a multi-parameter correlation between CAP and time delay. When applied to the Bandwidth criterion the results indicated that the Category C Level 2 boundary could be relaxed. |
