Details of plant structure and architecture, and the important physiological processes of photosynthesis, translocation, and transpiration are examined in this chapter. The structure and function of the different types of cells and tissues found in plants are described together with the internal organization of stems, leaves, and roots. Leaf and flower modifications for various functions are explained. The biochemical and photochemical steps of photosynthesis are considered and differences between the C3, C4, and crassulacean acid metabolism photosynthetic pathways are highlighted. Translocation of the products of photosynthesis is explained using the Pressure-Flow theory. Finally, the pathways and driving forces for water movement and transpiration in plants are reviewed. |
