A theory is presented for the absorption process in the air-pore system of concrete. It is shown, theoretically, that the absorption process is dependent on the size distribution of the air-pores. The finer the air-pore system, the more rapid the absorption, and the more rapid the increase in the degree of saturation of the concrete. It is also shown that the shape of the air-pore system has a big effect on the absorption rate. Measurements of the long-term water absorption in some concretes are compared with the theoretical solutions. The agreement is satisfactory. The water absorption rate can be used for an estimate of the service life of concrete exposed permanently to water. The service life is ended when the degree of saturation of the air-pore system equals the critical degree of saturation. |
