The article reviews the policy of the triumvir M. Antony after the unsuccessful Parthian campaign of 36 BC. Since Great Armenia proved to be an unreliable ally, Antony took the opportunity to conclude an alliance against Parthia with the king of the Media Atropatene. At the same time, it was planned to make the king of Armenia Alexander Helios, the son of Antony and Cleopatra, who married the daughter of the Median king, and part of the territory of Armenia was passed to Atropatene. With the help of these measures, Antony expected to strengthen firmly Roman influence on the northwestern border of Parthia, to provide, if necessary, a convenient path for invading the central regions of Parthia and secure the border along the Euphrates. This foreign policy project was quite realistic and would complete the formation of a security system on the Roman-Parthian border, but its implementation was prevented by the resumption of the struggle with Octavian and the defeat of Antony. |
