Popis: A technique of nanosecond stress impulse by plate impact with a light gas gun for study of dynamic response and damage mechanism of materials resulted from such as deposition of radiation beams is reported in this paper. Impulse duration of about 180 ns has been obtained with a specially designed and carefully processed impactor. To monitor the short pulse, x-cut quartz transducer with short cut circuit was adopted. Fair records were achieved which were similar to that generated by Laser in some aspects. The traces are interpreted satisfactorily according to the physical essence of the type of transducer. Carbon resistance gauge was also used to detect the stress pulse. The potential of the carbon gauge in this kind of transient stress measurement and implication are discussed in details. Finally, as an example, this technique was used in the damage study of fibre reinforced composite material.
